In 2012, Yoonjin Hwang opened a dessert cafe with her family which she called Spoon by H. Between her amazing flavor profiles and her unrivaled attention to detail, word of the small cafe began to travel fast. With more customers coming in, Hwang soon expanded her menu to include specialty dishes that burst with incredible flavor.
It wasn’t long before her cafe was discovered by chef David Chang (who named it as his restaurant of the year in 2018), Buzzfeed’s popular Worth It crew and Michelin, who recognized it as one of 2020’s incredible restaurant discoveries.
Despite the continued success, Spoon by H, like many restaurants, was hit with terrible wave of challenges in the midst of Covid-19. Business began to steadily slow and on February 5th, 2021, Hwang posted a message to patrons opening up about the recent rise in fraudulent charges that were ravaging her business and others. Less than two and a half weeks later, she would post again announcing Spoon by H’s permanent closure as a direct result of these scams.
Spoon by H is a special treasure for many people in the Los Angeles area as well as far beyond. For some, it is home. Many expressed a desire to attempt to keep Spoon by H alive via crowd fundraising, so this is that effort.
Running a restaurant is expensive - especially in Los Angeles. With a goal of $50,000, this will hopefully be a solid cushion to cover costs while restaurants remain closed during the vaccination period for Los Angeles residents. 100% of the proceeds raised as well as anything above the goal will go directly to the business as additional aid.
