Pastor Marian's Hospice House Fund
Donation protected
I am a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Auburn, ME. Our Pastor at Grace is Rev. Marian Marks. Last week, after many months of failing health, her husband, Joe Marks, was admitted to Hospice House in Auburn, Maine.
Joe's lack of need for "skilled nursing care" means that he does not meet the Medicare guidelines for Medicare to pay for his remaining at the Hospice House. The social worker told them that they could have to the end of the week to make a decision about what they wanted to do.
Option #1 would be for Joe to go home with in-home Hospice Care which allows for a nurse 2-3 times a week and a CNA to do his personal care for 1 hour a day for 5-7 days a week. They would have access to volunteers for up to 4 hours in a day for respite care.
Option #2 would be to put Joe in a nursing home with a hospice nurse going in 2-3 times a week.
Option #3 would be to keep Joe at the Hospice House and pay them out of pocket; this would mean a cost of $400/day.
Pastor immediately ruled out the Nursing Home option, as she would not likely be able to stay with Joe. Taking Joe home with in-home Hospice care makes her Joe's primary caretaker and she feels that within a very short period of time she would be exhausted and struggling with migraines due to lack of sleep. Her concerns are numerous so I'm not going to review them here, but what Pastor really wants is to be Joe's wife as they move through these last days of his life, not his caretaker.
What they have opted to do is to keep Joe at the Hospice House and pay the $400/day out-of-pocket fee. Any money that we can raise will be used to pay these fees, with any extra money going to Pr. Marian to use as she needs for other expenses.
This fund raising means that Pr. Marian and Joe will feel our love, our support and our concern for them. They have given of themselves in the care of our congregation and the surrounding community, and now it is our turn to return that love to them. Thank you to each and every one who can help, in whatever amount possible.
