Help The Harkins Family

The Harkins family is what many would consider an inspirational family, a family that has had much love but also one that has had many trials and tribulations. Yet no one would never know this given the grace and faith they have always shown as they faced adversity time and time again.

Cindy battled cancer as a pre-teenager and eventually lost her leg above the knee. 9 years ago she had open heart surgery and with her usual humor and fight, she continued to live a graceful life. In November of 2014, she was again diagnosed with cancer. In December, she lost one of her breasts to this disease. But she NEVER lost her will to live and her desire to make others happy. She lived an incredible life despite having these ongoing medical problems, inspiring many with her light, laughter, and love.

Her husband of 25 years, Tim, a self-employed plumber who is well respected in our community, has had his own medical battles. He was on dialysis for several years due to a hereditary kidney disease. He was blessed with a kidney transplant close to 5 years ago, thanks to Cindy's niece! But on March 13th of 2015, after close to 6 weeks in the hospital and having surgery due to complications with his original kidneys (which were not removed when the kidney transplant was done), he was diagnosed with renal cancer. To this day, he is awaiting treatment options. Due to this illness, he can no longer work. Cindy had been working and providing the much needed paycheck as well as the medical benefits for the family, which includes their son Devin.

On March 23, 2015, just 10 days after her husband was diagnosed with cancer, Cindy unexpectedly passed away in her sleep from an apparent heart attack. Her son, Devin, was the person who found her. Her husband Tim was still up in Albany Medical Center. The loss of Cindy is tough not only on her family, but on all of the friends she has left behind. She was a mentor and inspiration to the hundreds of students she worked with over the years at SUNY Ulster and SUNY New Paltz. She was the light in many of our lives and it is with honor and respect for the entire family that we seek to raise funds for them.

This Help the Harkins family with Healing and Hope fund is being set up to help cover the cost of paying for medical insurance payments so Tim can receive whatever treatments his doctors deem necessary for him to kick this renal cancer. He needs to have the least amount of stress as possible to fight this newest battle. He has just lost his wife. Their son has just lost his mother and now faces his father's illness. Please help us help them!

Since Tim and Devin do not have steady paychecks coming in at this time, this fund will also help them keep their home and pay for the basic needs of electricity, heat, and food.

Please consider making any amount of a donation to this fund. Any help will be greatly appreciated. We will be eternally grateful to you for your help. May God bless you!
