We write to you with a heavy heart, but also with a steadfast hope. Our beloved Rachel Merchant-Ly, an exceptional teacher at Glide Elementary School, has been involved in a serious accident. According to officials, her vehicle leftHighway 138 and entered the North Umpqua River. Currently, search and rescue efforts are underway and we await further information. As we await further information, we are enveloped in a whirlwind of emotions—fear, uncertainty, and an unwavering sense of solidarity.

Rachel is not just a teacher; she is a beacon of light in our community, a pillar of strength, and a cherished friend to many. Her dedication to her students, her family, and her community is unparalleled. Even in the face of adversity, she has always poured her heart and soul into everything she does.

Her love for the Pacific Northwest, with its rugged beauty and deep connections to her roots, is evident to anyone who knows her. Rachel finds solace in nature, and her passion for the outdoors is infectious. The emotional and financial toll of this tragedy is immense, and Rachel's family is seeking support during this trying time. Rachel's husband, Hao Ly, describes her as an incredible and cherished soul, with a million-dollar smile that could light up anyone's day. She brought joy to everyone she knew, loving each person for who they are.
