Rachel's Kidney Transplant

Hi, my name is Kai and I'm fundraising to help my mom, Rachel Thompson, to cover medical expenses related to a kidney transplant.

In November 2021, Rachel was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). ESRD is characterized as a complete loss of kidney function, requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant. Kidney failure happened very suddenly and resulted in a complete change in lifestyle. Over the past year, Rachel has received regular dialysis treatment three times per week in the evenings after work. She has responded well to treatment and despite the challenges of many hospital visits, surgeries, and dialysis-related infections, her health has improved over the past year.

Since Day 1 we knew we wanted to pursue transplant. While there are risks associated with surgery, our goal is for Mom to live a happy and healthy life. Rachel is a candidate under consideration for transplant through the Mayo Transplant Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.

The transplant program screens candidates and their donor's on many dimensions, including financial viability. In order to move forward, Rachel must have a medical spending account with enough funding to cover co-pays, insurance costs, and medication for the first year following surgery.

This GoFundMe campaign will cover medical expenses related to the surgery, affirming that Rachel is a strong candidate to move forward with the transplant.
