Help Me, Help Peru!

Hello, thank you for showing interest in supporting my new adventure! I am currently a sophomore at West Chester University majoring in English and Special Education. I have an increasing passion for helping others and finding new ways to do so.

I am excited to say I will be volunteering abroad this upcoming summer in Cusco, Peru with a non-profit organization. Through this program I will be working at a home that provides care and treatment for mentally and physically disabled children and adults. This home is run by Sisters, so I will be working closely with them and caring for the people at the home.  My project is called Mother Teresa Calcutta, Missionaries of Charity. This congregation comes from India and was started by Mother Teresa. There are many similar centers around the world. This home is always understaffed and the extra help and care is greatly appreciated there. My plan is to stay in Cusco and volunteer for four weeks starting the beginning of June. I will be living with a local family, which will allow me to become completely immersed in a new culture, all while volunteering abroad. While I am there I will be working approximately 6-7 hours a day Monday through Friday, and any other time I am needed.
54% of rural Peruvians live in poverty, with limited access to basic amenities and education. 19% live in "absolute poverty," meaning they survive on less than US$1 a day. A third of all rural children suffer chronic malnutrition and almost 20% of people do not speak Spanish, and therefore cannot access education, which is in Spanish. This country suffers from low income jobs, poor teaching skills in the rural areas, no full benefits for the primary health care, and chronic problems that the country has. The poor people are at greater risks for health illness because of the rural area that they live in due to the lack of clean water and sanitation. While I may not be be able to help in all of these areas, I hope to do my part to work towards better living for their community.
There are many reasons why I am interested in this type of trip.  I know it may not be the ideal summer trip for most college students but it is what my heart has been calling me to do! I am involved with a lot of service work at my school and surrounding areas including adapted swim lessons and physical education, working in a local shelter, and this upcoming spring I will be leading a group of WCU students in the Bronx to work with disadvantaged youth in academic enrichment activities, and many other types of service work. So as you can see I enjoy giving my time to a wide variety of people and now I will have an opportunity to take my skills abroad and compare it to my experiences here in the United States. This will also allow me to "get my feet wet," as I can build on this for my future. This trip is something that really excites me and I am becoming more passionate about it with each day.  I have been given a chance to take my love for helping others to a completely new area. This opportunity will allow me to be part of something much bigger than myself.

Peru is filled with great and exciting opportunities, but as a college student it is not something I can fund alone. I know times are tough but any donation, big or small, will help me tremendously in my journey to Cusco, Peru. If you are not in a position to donate towards my trip I understand, and I am just asking for prayers while I am on this journey. Any money raised passed my goal will be donated to the community I will be working in.
