The Alliance for Black NICU Families™ came together in unity from two preemie moms of different backgrounds who sought to make a difference in the racial and health equity space. Why? The rate of preterm birth among African American women (14.4%) was about 50% higher than the rate of preterm birth among White or Hispanic women (9.3% and 10%, respectively).
- Beyond disparities in the rates of preterm births, premature infants of racial and ethnic minorities have poorer outcomes compared with their premature white peers.
- Compared with white infants, black infants were concentrated at lower-quality NICUs and non-Hispanic and Asian infants at higher-quality NICUs.
- Research noted sources of these disparities are systemic racism, discrimination, and societal structures that confer disadvantages to minority populations.
The Alliance for Black NICU Families™ seeks to create change with:
Policy: Requiring Racial & Health Equity training annually in all states.
- Provide micro-grants for Black-led organizations in the neonatal space
Assistance Grants to NICU Families
- Provide FREE wearable breast pumps for Black mothers in the NICU allowing us to support moms directly at bedside. A wearable breast pump allows moms to pump while holding their preemies in the NICU, it allows moms to return to work and pump for their preemie inconspicuously and pump at home while not tethered to a pump machine. (estimated value: $270/pump)
