RU Hockey Alum, Family, Friends, and Fans of Radford Hockey thank you in advance for coming to our site. As most of you know Radford Hockey is a largely (over 80%) player funded program. Essentially, that means that most expenses are paid for by individual player dues collected during the season. To be completely transparent for those who may not know, these expenses include:
1) Two sets of League dues between the ACHA, the national governing body of collegiate club hockey, and the ECCHA/BRHC, which is the over 20-member Division III league to which RU belongs
2) Annual Referee dues which pays for the use of 3 officials for every game
3) Ice Time (10-12 Home games plus 15-20 practices)
4) Jersey/Socks/Shells (typically purchasing new team set of jerseys every other year)
5) Travel expenses for Away games (Hotels/Gas)
One can see, the club hockey program has one of, if not the largest budget of all club sports, and only receives a smaller and varying amount of financial support from the University every year. Thus we rely very heavily on player funding.
As we hope you've taken note of in the past few years, the RU Hockey program has evolved and is continuing to develop into a perenial league championship contender. The growth of the program has resulted in higher caliber opponents that want and request to schedule with Radford. For instance, for the second year in a row, we will be hosting the University of Tennessee at home for two games, one of which is the night before the largest hockey game in the Roanoke area, the Guns & Hoses MDA charity game. The plan is to tie this in with a hopeful alumni/fundraiser event. We've also developed year over year relationships with other Top 15 ranked teams such as CNU, Liberty, George Mason, etc. The RU program is continuing to gain more and more respect year after year.
Expectedly though, with the accelerated program growth, comes a different set of challenges of a financial nature, such as quantity of ice time in order to consistently compete and quite possibly additional league dues, as the current league is most likely going to be restructured again.
With that premise in mind, we need your quick and earnest help. At the end of last year, we came up a little short with our funding budget due to a slightly lower player headcount than expected. Without the budgeted number of players, that would normally carry the team through the season, we ended up approximately $1000 over budget. Unfortunately, this oversight fell on our ice rental agreement with the Roanoke Civic Center, now known as the Berglund Center. After trying to get additional extensions, we've now been told that we have until the end of this month to pay the remaining balance or not only face additional financial measures but also most likely forfeit our home ice slots for the upcoming season. As you can imagine, that action would likely set back the program in a major, perhaps even unrecoverable way.
With that said, we'd like to ask for your prudent financial assistance in raising $1500, to not only satisfy the $1000 due to our facility but also have a small headstart in the coffers before the season starts. We've put together a simple roadmap to help us get there and humbly ask for your support at one of the following levels (or more if possible):
10 People donate $75 or more
10 People donate $50 or more
10 People donate $25 or more
As a reminder, all donations are completely tax-deductible as we are a 501c3 organization.
Thank you again for considering the support.
