Hello, we are Luis David Hiraldo and Maria Ortiz, producers and hosts of the radio program ASI CANTA PUERTO RICO, in Memory of Don Luis Bonilla. It airs Sundays, 7 to 9 a.m. on WMVX Impacto 1110 AM. Don Luis Bonilla was born in Puerto Rico in 1920. He was raised in Caguas, PR, in the suburb of Bairoa. There, he grew up with Ramito, Moralito and Luisito, three of the most popular Jíbaro Music Singers. Jíbaro Music is Country or Mountain Music of Puerto Rico.

Eventually, Don Luis moved to the United States. He worked in the farms of New Jersey and lived in New York and Massachusetts.

In 1997, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, the Rodriguez Lopez family, friends of Don Luis, founded the radio program ASI CANTA PUERTO RICO. Because of his love and knowledge of the Puerto Rican culture and Jíbaro Music, Don Luis was invited to be part of the program. His love for the program was such, that when the Rodriguez Lopez family left the show in the year 2000, Don Luis, at the age of 80 and with help from some friends, kept the program on the air by reaching out to sponsors and paying for it himself. I joined the Group of Helpers in 2000, and Maria Ortiz in 2003.

Don Luis Bonilla fell ill, missed one program, and peacefully passed away in his home at the age of 92. Yes! At 92, he was still producing and hosting his favorite radio program, his own, ASI CANTA PUERTO RICO!

Before he departed from this earth, Don Luis Bonilla, known as "El Muñequito de Oro" (The Golden Doll), asked Maria and me to keep the program on the air. Of course, we told him that we would do everything we could to keep his program, ASI CANTA PUERTO RICO, on the air.

It's been 10 years since Don Luis left us, but his favorite radio show is still on the air, thanks to a special sponsor and friends of ASI CANTA PUERTO RICO.

Now, our funds for the program are very low. We have enough to cover for about 8 to 10 more programs before the funds run out. In order to maintain ASI CANTA PUERTO RICO on the air, we have to continue paying Costa Eagle Broadcasting $541 per month. That's $6,500 per year.
