The Mauritius Coral Reef is of extreme international importance as it is one of the few places left on Earth to retain such high biodiversity. Because of the unfortunate location of the oil spill, oil is being brought by ocean currents into two environmentally protected marine ecosystems. Home to 1,700 species, including 800 of fish, 17 of marine mammals and 2 of turtles. The phenomenal coral reefs, mangroves and sea grasses also contain hundreds of plant species which are being terribly affected.
This oil spill will have devastating and long-lasting effects on the coral reef which supports all these species, resulting in many losses, including those which already are endangered. The damage caused by the oil goes beyond what’s visible on the surface. Soluble oil compounds will dissolve into the water, forming a thick mousse-like layer underneath the surface, followed by very heavy residues settling on the seabed and coral reefs, affecting the entire marine ecosystem. Not only do 25% of fish in the ocean rely on coral reefs, but also humans. Coral reefs are vital in protecting coastlines from storms and erosion as well as being the very pillars of tourism in Mauritius, and a huge part of the country's economy.
It’s more important now than ever to donate money to help clear the oil spill from these coral reefs, and to conserve and surveil these effected species to ensure their survival in the future.
