Raise $40k for Humanitarian causes in Israel

I turned 40 today, and my 40th birthday wish is to support our brothers and sisters in Israel.
Our goal is to raise $40,000 over the next 72 hours - with Amy and I matching every dollar given up to $20k.
Like all of you, we have been devastated and crushed by the atrocities and evil unleashed on our people last Shabbat. Given the magnitude of what transpired – and what’s likely to come – we feel that it’s not appropriate to continue with my 40th birthday party celebration. We can’t fathom celebrating in the way we intended to while our brothers and sisters in Israel are suffering & under attack, especially when they will likely be engaged in a ground war in Gaza.
To that end, we want to channel all the pain and everyone’s overwhelming desire to do something, to help, to make a difference, to tell our story, into something much more significant. Our goal is to raise $40,000 over the next 72 hours.
Here’s the plan:
- We’re going to raise $40k for my 40th
- Amy and I are committed to matching the first $20k of donations; for every dollar raised we’ll match it 1:1
- Raising $20k will allow us the gift of matching $20k, getting us to $40k
- The money will be directed to the Jewish Federation of San Diego & ZAKA
- San Diego’s sister city region in Israel is made up of almost all of the Kibbutzim that were most terribly effected by the attacks
- Lives & communities – physically, spiritually, emotionally, mentally – need to be rebuilt
- ZAKA does some of the hardest, most thankless work – collecting the dead victims of these atrocities and treating them with dignity in preparation for burial
- Everyone is deserving – there are so many needs in so many areas, and we’ve supported many of them – but for this effort we’ve chosen to focus on these two organizations
We have no doubt that everyone has given generously already. The way the Jewish people has come together for one another has been unbelievable. But, in honor of my birthday and our deep and unrelenting love for Israel and the Jewish people we’re going to ask you to dig deep and do more – people are on the front lines, lives have been destroyed, women and children have been kidnapped. They have paid the ultimate price, and it is our collective responsibility to go above and beyond to support them. Noting about this situation is normal, and our efforts to support them should reflect that. Please join us in doing something incredible.
