The Race Across America is the world's most gruelling cycling race, with competitors riding coast to coast across the United States in an extraordinary feat of endurance. Starting on the East Coast of California, cyclists race against each other and the clock to finish on the West Coast in Maryland. A ride of some 5,000km and 55,000m of climbing. This is undoubtedly the world's most gruelling individual cycling race at the moment on the world stage.
Imagine my surprise when I discovered that millions of dollars are paid for those who are good at hitting a little white ball into a round hole. Yet, those athletes who triumph in one of the most impressive feats of endurance on the planet are not paid a single cent in prizemoney.
This year, the overall winner in 10 days and 15 minutes was Allan Jefferson, who is now well and truly an Australian Cycling Legend. A true champion supported by a fantastic team.
So this fundraising effort is to try and rustle up a few dollars, to recognise and reward what can only be described as an absolutely jaw-dropping accomplishment. So dip your hands in your pockets and help us ensure that Al receives something more than a pat on the back for what can only be described as a superhuman effort that has done Australia proud.
