Help Raise the Roof at Grandma Freddie's Farmhouse

On August 14, 2020, an unprecedented storm battered the small community of Mankato in North Central Kansas, with high winds, tornados and softball-size hail, devastating crops and homes. One of those homes belongs to our grandmother, Fredrica Murphy. Grandma Freddie’s house was built in the 1890’s and sat abandoned for years until she and my Grandpa Stanley bought it 40 years ago and worked hard to bring it back to life as a place where they could live out their golden years, with room for a garden and plenty of space for the grandkids. For the 20 years since she lost the love of her life to cancer, she’s carried on alone, maintaining her home as a refuge for family and friends.

The storm punched holes in her roof, smashed the wooden siding and shattered windows. When we asked her if insurance would cover the damage, she confided that she had let the policy lapse because it was too expensive. She has told us that she will find a way to fix her house and not to worry, but we want to do something to help this incredible woman who has given so much with no thought for herself.
Her willingness to help others in need is unwavering, regardless of her personal circumstance. She has worked tirelessly to serve children and families in her community for many years in a variety of roles from Head Start teacher to Hospice volunteer, and continues to do so now by providing child day-care in her home.
Her grandchildren have organized this fundraiser to try and ease the financial burden she is currently facing. The estimated cost to re-shingle her roof and replace the damaged siding and broken windows is $10,000. We hope that we can show her even a fraction of the generosity that she has shown others for her entire life. With your help, we can repair her home; a cherished monument to love and family.
