My name is Nick Hewitt , ex army , and damage to my spine at L5/S1 , strangely my transition to a chair wasn't as swift as many, i injured my back on a fall , and from that day just lost everything around me and very slowly lost the life i once had , over a period of years my ability to walk just got harder and harder and with every step came extreme pain and swelling , every call to the Dr became a self referral to physio and hand full of drugs and a vicious circle that controlled my life for many years, i had days where i would walk a few meters and then i was stuck in bed for weeks at a time , weeks off work could easily turn in to months but i felt the care i was getting wasn't what i needed , we would push hospitals and i always felt like a forgotten patient and if im honest i feel if i was seen when i first had the problems i would be walking and living a normal life today. first i was given a walking stick to help mobility many years ago , that soon turned to crutches and when i could no longer move on those with out serious swelling and pain and my legs not wanting to work , the nhs gave me a wheelchair , my back will always get worse and the hospitals have sated they will not operate as it happened so long ago they risk making everything worse with operations , we have found damaged to my L5/S1 and the welling is everything my body can do to protect the damage , we went through many spinal and nerve injections until i was injected on the wrong side of my spine , yep , then that course of pain relief stopped . i have been in a wheelchair now for coming up to four years and honesty i feel like i have a life back ,.
i know i will not have the ability to walk again and I'm so content with that I'm happy in life . I'm always chasing goals and always need a focus hence the next goal and focus is this.
life.
my career in the army was just that i never planned nothing else , i wanted to serve for the full term and live my life as a solider that was taken from me , since my medical discharge i wont lie i have taken years to find what i wanted to do and settle in work , which is normal or all ex forces trying to fit back in to normal life when the job you done was anything but normal , unfortunately its ever harder to fit in normal life and find a job when your in a wheelchair , and since life in a wheelchair i have been focused on making life better and trying to reach the dreams and goals that able bodied athlete can reach . i set a target to get a bodybuilding wheelchair show in the uk with the chance for athletes to turn pro with the best bodybuilding federation in the world , we made that dream come true in 2022 the show in the uk now has 2 shows a year and is thriving , i competed as i started the push for the division in the uk and i went on to win that show and turned professional myself , i truly love bodybuilding but the goal for me was to push myself as far as i could , i got to the very highest level that anyone can achieve in that sport , qualifying for 2 Mr. Olympias , my dreams do not stop there now im trying to get myself to the the Invictus games in wheelchair sprinting 100m 200m and maybe 400m , i have also applied for the London marathon for the Invictus team as well . i have never done anything like that distance so a lot need to go in to this , the ultimate goal would be to get to the paralympic 2028 . not just for me but to show people living with disability life doesn't stop , we can still have dreams and goals and reach the pinnacles in sports , living with disables isn't easy and as stubborn as we all are we do need help with a lot of things , i have an amazing network of people around me an extremely loving and supportive wife and children and its for them i do this . always pushing me forward, i owe everything . this page is to help me to raise enough funds to purchase a racing wheelchair . Unfortunately they are extremely expensive and by the time I could save for one I wouldn’t have the time to be able to improve on times and reach my goal .
at the moment I only have access to a chair and a track once a week . So to have my own chair I could practice daily . Which would highly benefit this dream .
thank you all in advance .
