How I became a member of the 2023/2024 Clipper Round the World Crew In 2019 I went down to Gosport to be interviewed as a crew member of the 2021/22 Clipper Round the World race. The original idea was to sail on three legs, 4, 5 and 6, and to top and tail the sailing with travels with Catherine. The interview was successful and I signed up. Since the adventure would coincide with my retirement, Catherine was quite happy for me to be kept busy and out of her hair. Covid pushed my adventure back and, in a change to my original plans I will now be circumnavigating the globe in 2023/24. Catherine and our daughter will be catching up with me in Australia. Training has been intense so far and will only get tougher. I have completed three of the four levels needed before we set sail in September for the 11-month race. The next key date is May 2023 when we will be allocated to our team and boat. This will be the first opportunity to meet our fellow crew mates and the Skipper and AQP. After crew allocation, in June and July, the 11 boats in the race will carry out racing and Level 4 training before the boats are prepared for the race start. Whilst I have funded the Clipper cost personally, I wish to support two charities before I set sail on this adventure, these being Dementia UK and UNICEF UK and all the monies donated will be passed to both charities in full. The choice of the two charities was based on personal experience. Dementia UK currently supports two family members who are suffering from this horrible disease; it is also the chosen charity of the Master of the Worshipful Company of Butchers. Our two grown-up children had a safe and protected childhood, but not all children do. UNICEF UK supports children across the globe and tries to make a difference to their lives, whether blighted by war or famine. UNICEF UK has been the chosen charity for Clipper Round The World for many circumnavigations. I do hope you will be able to help me support these two worthy charities. As all donations are coming to me personally, you cannot gift aid your donation. However, I will be able to gift aid the entire amount when I send the money to the charities.
