THE BACKSTORY
Kenya is home to nearly 50 Million people - 97% of the population lives in rural areas and depends on either subsistence agriculture or livestock for their livelihoods. Even before the Covid-19 pandemic, environmental challenges in Kenya like deforestation, soil erosion, water scarcity and pollution from industry make subsistence farming difficult. These challenges are exacerbated by floods and droughts that threaten national security and increase economic vulnerability.
All of these challenges are particularly present in the Kajiado district of Kenya, southeast of Nairobi. This is home to the indigenous Maasai people, who for many years have struggled economically and socially. Nearly a third of children in Kajiado have stunted development due to malnutrition. Half of the population lives on less than a dollar a day.
World Relief has been doing beautiful and important work there for the last 2 years, investing in and empowering local churches and community leaders to meet short-term needs while also building toward long-term change for a thriving future.
THE CURRENT CRISIS
Despite the progress of the last 2 years, the Covid-19 pandemic is threatening the people in Kajiado in new and alarming ways. As a response to the health crisis of the pandemic, the Kenyan government has severely limited movements across the entire country and closed its borders. Economic disruptions and food scarcity are critical problems. The shut-down of commerce and movement across the country is disproportionately affecting poor Kenyan families, specifically in Kajiado. The small businesses that vulnerable families rely on for income are closed and farmers are unable to travel and sell their produce at markets.
Covid-19 is expected to create even more significant food shortages in the coming months in Kenya. Supply chains will dwindle, families will grow hungry and resources will be hard to come by. Those who were already vulnerable are seeing their plights worsen each day.
