Raising Resources For Readers 2019

3R’s – Raising Resources for Readers is a group formed in 2014/2015 with the mission to improve educational retention for elementary school-aged kids following summer break. Research shows that kids with access to books they choose read more, and when they read more during the summer months they are better equipped to begin the school year without a deficit.
Did you know that kids in middle income houses have access, on average, to more than 70 books in their homes? Kids of low income houses have few if any books in their homes. It’s hard to image isn’t it? Reading is the foundation for lifelong learning and there are children out there without books to call their own.
Founders Mike and Susan Myers started this journey armed with these facts and a desire to make a difference. Since then they have recruited many others to participate through volunteering time and donations.
In the first year, 257 children from William Perry Elementary school purchased over 2000 books to take home during the summer with your donations. During fall testing, significant improvements were identified in the student’s retention of knowledge over the summer.
Each year since more children have been served. Each April they take a field trip to The Green Valley Book Fair in Central Virginia and pick roughly $20 worth of books. The books are stored until the last day of school when each child gets a bag with his or her books inside to take home and read during the summer. A partnership with the Green Valley Book Fair makes it possible for each child to take home 5-10 books.
Last school year donations of $15,500 supported the students from William Perry and Wenonah Elementary. A total of 770 students were able to take home books for the summer. Each year we hope to serve more children, but only with your help.
Steve Jobs once expressed his desire to make a difference by saying “I’d like to put a ding in the Universe”. We believe that Raising Resources for Reading is going to make that “ding” many times over. We do it with your support. Please join us in making a difference.
