Background
Skipp (Brett) Hanson is a father of 4 and married to his enduring wife Kendra. Skipp is a 12-year service member of the Canadian Armed Forces, fulfilling a lifelong dream to serve. His career took him from the Canadian Forces Base 2nd VP in Shilo MB to CFB Wainwright where he then earned the rank of Sergeant. He was currently working in Range Control during this time, raising a young family and beginning a passion for carpentry hobbies commencing a wholesome life for the young family.
In July 2024, the Hanson family faced a devastating blow when their eldest daughter, Freyja, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. At only four years old, Freyja's diagnosis marked the beginning of a challenging battle against cancer. The family quickly mobilized to ensure she received the best care available, which necessitated regular trips to Stollery Hospital in Edmonton, located over two hours from their home.
Family Support
Understanding the gravity of Freyja's condition, the Hanson’s were not alone in their fight. Grandparents from both sides of the family came to lend support, along with other family members and friends, offering help as Kendra, Skipp and the girls faced the emotional and logical complexity of Freyja's treatment. Amidst this turmoil, Kendra and Skipp were expecting a third daughter, adding to both the excitement and the challenges of their current circumstances. Baby Runa was anticipated to arrive in November.
Challenges and Struggles
As the family prepared for Freyja's treatment, they encountered additional challenges, such as vehicle troubles that complicated their travel for medical appointments. Yet, exemplifying their family’s spirit, they remained committed to ensuring Freyja received her necessary treatments while also caring for Ellie and preparing for the arrival of baby Runa.
Further Tragedy
The situation took a harrowing turn on October 27, 2024, when Skipp was involved in a tragic accident that resulted in a serious brain injury. He was quickly transported by STARS Ambulance to the ICU in Edmonton, where he continues to fight for his life. The family faces day-to-day uncertainty regarding Skipp’s condition and the extent of his recovery.
The Birth of Baby Runa
Despite the heartache and chaos surrounding them, with amazing support from friends and family, Kendra welcomed baby Runa into the world via cesarean section while Freyja continued her treatment and Skipp lay in the ICU. This bittersweet moment brought both joy and additional challenges as Kendra balanced caring for a newborn, Freyja and Ellie all while managing the stress of Freyja's illness and her husband’s critical condition.
Fundraising Campaign
In light of these overwhelming circumstances, the Hanson family has decided to launch a fundraising campaign. This initiative allows family, friends, community members and beyond to show their support through contributions. The funds raised will serve several purposes:
Caregiver Support: With Skipp recovering from a brain injury, the need for caregiver support will be essential as the family adjusts to their new reality. This funding will help cover costs associated with around the clock attention or modifying their routine to meet Freyja's and Skipp's needs.
Home Modifications: As Skipp progresses through recovery, the family’s home will require adaptations to accommodate his needs. This could include installing ramps, widening doorways, or making other necessary changes to ensure he has a safe and accessible living environment.
Travel and Medical Expenses: Ongoing treatments for Freyja and regular visits to the hospital for Skipp will incur significant travel and medical expenses that the family must manage.
Community Impact
This campaign not only aims to alleviate some of the financial burdens faced by the Hanson family but also provides an opportunity for their community to come together during this difficult time. By supporting the Hanson’s, individuals can show their solidarity and caring, helping the family focus on healing and recovery rather than financial stress.
If you would like to contribute or learn more about how to assist the Hanson family, you can do so here on the official GoFundMe online platform that is hosting this campaign. Every contribution, no matter the size, can provide much-needed support and hope to the Hanson family in their time of need.
**Update**
I would like to say thank you to you all for your gift of generosity. Your support is tremendous and really is helping to shed a light during this time. Skipp has recently graduated out of ICU after 6 long weeks yet is awaiting a necessary skull surgery. Still everyday the medical team are trying to explore his capabilities.
Other sad news, Kendra's Dad passed away. So when we say your support is tremendous...it really is! At times I am speechless and cannot fathom the full plate of life challenges the Hanson family is going through at one time.
