Help Don Recover from a horrible Christmas Eve Scooter Accident

Dear friends, family, and kind strangers,

On Christmas Eve, our dear friend Don’s life changed in an instant! While riding his scooter down Holly Street, Don was struck by a pick-up truck. The tragic accident left him with a shattered leg and a torn bicep, injuries that require extensive medical treatment, surgeries, and months of physical therapy to recover.

For anyone who knows Don, or San Juan Don in small circles, he is an avid hiker, so much so that he has written five guidebooks, three in a trilogy for the PNW, including his latest: Day Hikes in Washington State. He is a trained chef with formal training from The Culinary Institute of America but moved to the front of the house decades ago and now thoroughly enjoys his role as a beloved chill bartender at Bellingham's CHeBA HUT. If he's not serving up tasty cocktails, jello shots and dank subs he is outside photographing the remote wonders of the North Cascades, the San Juan Islands and the local mountains around Bellingham. He loves playing his steal tongue drum, mountain biking, riding scooters and "urban hiking" between epic adventures! No matter the weather or what's happening around us Don greets us coming into the Hut with a warm smile and some light-hearted humor, but now, he needs our help!

The Impact

Because the driver was uninsured, Don is left to shoulder the immense financial burden of his recovery on his own. This includes:

Emergency medical care

Surgery to repair his leg and potentially his arm

Retrofitting his apartment to accommodate a walker or crutches

Ongoing physical therapy and rehabilitation

Lost wages during his recovery period

Don’s resilience and positive attitude are inspiring, but no one should face this kind of challenge alone!
