Rally for Renita

CANCER SUCKS. It sucks even more when you’ve already beaten it once and thought you were in the clear.

A couple of years ago, my Mother-in-Law, Renita Wilson, was diagnosed with Squamous Cell cancer. She underwent chemotherapy, immunotherapy, numerous hospitalizations, and countless trips to and from Houston to see the experts at MD Anderson. A few months ago she received the amazing news that there was no longer any sign of cancer, but there was still some concern as they were never able to find the “primary” source of the cancer.

Fast forward a few months to June 2023. Renita’s heart was beating irregularly, she had a dangerously low white blood cell count, and she was having a very difficult time breathing, despite being on oxygen. She was hospitalized many times and discharged a few days later believing the issue had been resolved. She ended up spending almost the entire month of June in the hospital with readmissions. After multiple tests and biopsies, including a bone marrow biopsy, her doctors believed she may have Leukemia and she was referred to Medical City Dallas where she was again hospitalized. After additional tests, she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), the treatment for which requires an intense chemo regiment, blood transfusions, a bone marrow transplant, and at least a month-long hospitalization (to start off with).

As you can imagine, Renita and her husband Robert are still recovering from the overwhelming financial weight of her previous cancer diagnosis, treatment, travel, and time off of work. She has exhausted all of her paid time off and is now on unpaid leave.

Our strong and compassionate matriarch has always been the pillar of our family, spreading love, joy, and wisdom to all who have had the privilege of knowing her. She is a Wife, Mother, Mother-in-Law, Aunt, Friend, Co-worker, and Grandmother to two year old twins - her most favorite role of all. Now, faced with this daunting health challenge, we are determined to stand by her side and provide the unwavering support she needs to conquer this disease.

AML is an aggressive and relentless foe, and its treatment journey is both physically and emotionally taxing. As she fights through the pain and challenges, we want to ensure that Renita’s focus remains on healing and recovery, without the burden of financial stress. The funds raised through this campaign will be directed towards her medical expenses, including vital treatments, medications, hospital stays, and any necessary specialized care; in addition to assisting with routine household

expenses such as mortgage and utilities while she is unable to earn income. Additionally, we aim to provide her with the comfort and strength she deserves. These funds will also help alleviate the strain on her family, allowing them to dedicate more time and energy to providing loving care and companionship during this difficult time.
