Dear Family and Friends:
Thank you so much for the outpouring of love and support for Raúl Dávalos.
As most of you know, Raúl was diagnosed with a brain tumor in December 2016. He immediately underwent brain surgery to remove the tumor, which then turned out to be malignant. Raúl’s long journey of treatment just began when it was discovered that the cancer had also spread to his gatroesophogal junction. Raúl spent most of the year going through chemo and radiation treatments. Throughout Raúl’s treatment, his doctors nicknamed him “Super Man” because of his tenacity, drive and especially his positive attitude to “kick cancer’s butt”. In August 2017, Raúl got the wonderful news that his cancer was in remission.
It’s unbelievable how in the blink of an eye everything has changed. Now, just two months later, just when we all thought he was in the clear, Raúl started having seizures a couple of weeks ago and was admitted to the St Joseph’s Hospital in Burbank. He was in the neuro unit while they tried to figure out the source of his seizures. They discovered that two more small tumors have appeared on his brain. Raul started struggling to breath on his own and had to be moved into the I.C.U. He has now been there since Saturday, October 21, 2017 and is currently on life support.
Raúl is the epitome of hard work and determination. Raúl was born in Cuba and moved to the United States with his family when he was just a baby. He was raised in Key Biscayne, Florida where he discovered his love of film. Raúl attended The London Film School and concentrated on film editing. After eventually moving to Los Angeles in the 1980’s, Raul started out as an assistant editor and worked under his mentor, Carol Littleton famously known for “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” eventually moving up the ranks to editor. Raúl worked on numerous movies, documentaries and television series over the years. Working on television shows such as “The Gilmore Girls”, “The Glades” and most recently working on one of his favorite projects ever - the hit show “Empire”.
Many of you have reached out and asked what you can do to help.
To be clear, most of Raúl’s main medical treatment has been covered through his Motion Picture Industry Health plan. However, there are still many other expenses that have not been covered including his home care and other family living expenses: the home mortgage and his children's education. Raúl has always been the main source of income for his family and if you know Raúl, you know that his family is his entire world. Raúl is so proud of his wonderful children Alina and Alex both whom he is still supporting through school while they continue to live at home. His loving and devoted wife Cindy (and our dear friend) has been under immense pressure to continue to work full time while he was undergoing treatment all year as well as pay for the in home care which was not covered by insurance. Now, with this sad turn of events, we would like to ask for help so that some of the financial burdens can be eased and Cindy can focus on being there for Raúl as much as possible while Raúl is on life support.
One thing is for sure, Raúl would do anything for his family and friends without a thought. That’s just who is he is and we want to do what we know he would do for us if the tables were turned.
Anything you could donate to help his family out through this very difficult and trying time would be more than welcome. You really can help make a difference.
Thank you again for all your love and support.
Love,
Team Raúl
