Ramadan 2024 at Wave Thessaloniki

WAVE Thessaloniki is dedicated to supporting people on the move both documented and undocumented in Thessaloniki, as well as the city’s homeless population, in accessing healthy, cooked meals, essential hygiene and clothing items every day. Many people we serve, especially those without documents, disproportionately experience food insecurity and rely on us for the daily hot meals prepared and provided at Wave. In the last months, we have experienced an increase in people coming to our centre and are serving between 60 and 100 people every day.

As Ramadan approaches, we are aiming to support our community, many of whom are Muslim, to mark this month together- we are excited to celebrate indoors once again this year! Ramadan is a Holy month of reflection and prayer in the Islamic faith, marked by fasting during daylight hours and ‘Iftars’ at sunset, which is sharing a meal as a community. In addition to spiritual growth, Ramadan is a period of generosity, community giving and helping those in need. We’re asking for your assistance to help support our community during this sacred month, especially since many are far away from their homes and loved ones.

This Ramadan, we would like to ensure that everyone gets extra food throughout the month, especially Suhoor, the meal before fasting begins. Alongside hot meals, we plan to provide dates and milk, traditionally consumed to break the fast. Our menu will also include soups, meat dishes and desserts. However, rising levels of inflation onset by the cost of living crisis, in combination with an increasing number of people visiting our centre, at Wave we are trying to meet this ever-growing demand for the support and assistance we are aiming to provide.

So, we are aiming to raise €1500 to ensure we are able to buy costly items such as meat, additional takeaway equipment- costing around €360 and essential cooking products - for instance, 5kg of rice will cost €8, olive oil is priced around €18 for 5 litres and 1kg of dates is set around €5. Any donation, regardless of the amount, will help us provide nourishing meals for our community during this important month.
