Ramps Needed to Make Temple Emanuel Accessible
Donation protected
Temple Emanuel of Pueblo, on the National Register of Historic Places, is attempting to raise $160,000 to make the 122-year-old synagogue more accessible to everyone. "The ramp being designed is intended to provide accessibility while maintaining the historic integrity and structural stability of the building," said Michael Atlas-Acuña, board president of Temple Emanuel, in a news release. "Consequently, the projected cost is roughly $160,000."
Efforts have been made to raise funds through donations and grant applications. However, the money raised was not nearly enough. Two years ago the temple rebuilt its social hall after a trespasser started a catastrophic fire that damaged the building to the point it had to be gutted and renovated. Earlier this year, Temple Emanuel launched a massive fundraising campaign to restore the structural integrity of the building after finding structural damage to the temple caused by a shifting foundation. More than $100,000 was raised to repair the aging structure. This month, the Temple is also repairing and repainting interior ceiling plaster. The small congregation of 35 families is tapped out. They don't have another $160,000 to construct the ramps.
