An update about Randy, from Randy ;) 7/6/23
I wanted to take a moment to personally express my gratitude for all I've received. I’m incredibly humbled by the outpouring of love, prayers, calls, texts, visits and monetary assistance from friends, family and even from people I’ve never met- it all blows me away. Your efforts to encourage my healing, me staying the course and following doctors orders (not easy for the impatient me!) have all led me to a point where I can see light at the end of the tunnel.

Tomorrow will be the first day I will be able to stand vertically on my own two feet for the first time in 2 1⁄2 months. (Special shout-out to Kristen Parsley from PT in Motion for lending her time and expertise.) I will practice standing (only!) for two weeks, and then, I will start my rehab to learn to walk again. (I went to PHHS and UCLA, so I definitely have the stumbling part mastered.) In all seriousness, I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity to even be at this point.

I have been blessed with a phenomenal support and advocacy team. First, my amazing sister, Tracy Hennis Sonck. Once again, you have come through like the rockstar you are. I could not have navigated this situation and its craziness, (paperwork, phone calls, case management, insurance issues), without your calm, cool demeanor, but also, your ability to turn into a pitbull when needed to advocate for me. I can’t express how thankful I am that in the midst of your own responsibilities and life’s craziness, you took the time to make sure you had my back. Can’t thank you enough. Love you, Sis.

To my amazing parents: Dad and Mel...thank you for your continued support and all of the amazing food. Mel, I appreciate you driving my dad to see me and guiding him where he needs to go. Dad, thanks for keeping me laughing with all of your inappropriate jokes ;) Mom, you are always at the ready, always organizing, always seeing what you can do for me. I gave you the nickname Momhammed Ali because of the way that you put on your boxing gloves and are ready to go toe to toe with hospitals, case managers, insurance companies, or anyone else trying to mess with your children! You are treasured more than you know. I’m so grateful and fortunate to have parents like you in my corner at all times. I love you all.

To the one and only Deborah Abel Crossland. You have been there by my side more days than I can count and even deserve, with a smile on your face, helping to make each day easier. You made sure I had everything I needed, providing lots of laughter, tears, honesty and sanity to help get me through, putting me ahead of your many life’s responsibilities. I owe you so much and I’m so thankful that we are on this journey together. Love you soooooooooo.

Now that I’m out of breath, just to let you know, I have escaped the skilled nursing facility. I’m currently ( for the next few weeks) staying in a Mission Valley Hotel. For those who have inquired, please feel free to contact me directly from this point forward by text or call. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart. I am so truly blessed.

UPDATE: 5/22/23
Hi everyone, this is Tracy Hennis Sonck, Randy's sister. First of all, Randy is very humbled by your generous donations. He is, quite frankly, speechless and not sure how to respond. Our entire family is extremely grateful for all of the love, support and prayers you have been sending his way. It truly takes a village to get through something like this.

I apologize for not updating this sooner but this past week we have been challenged with some insurance and hospital issues. In summary, he was erroneously discharged from Palomar trauma care and sent to Sharp Hospital. There have been a lot of finger-pointing and changes as to where to send him for skilled nursing. With that being said, he is in good care with Sharp until this is all worked out. We will hopefully know which skilled nursing facility this week. He will be there indefinitely until he is cleared for acute rehabilitation.

He still can't put any weight on either leg and has to be very careful given his neck and back fusion. However, they have started a little bit of therapy with him since he has been at Sharp. It takes 2 physical therapists to get him into his plastic turtle suit and then work to get him into a wheelchair. He is no small human as you all know but he has been a trooper! He even wheeled down the hall the other day (at a 90-degree angle with his foot sticking out straight but he did it!). Even that little bit is exhausting. Randy has been an amazing patient and is determined to make some kind of progress each day. The staff loves him (shocker!) so he is making the most of his new friendships :)

Once we get the information about where he will be, how long he will be there, his therapy plan, etc., I will update this once again. Feel free to reach out to Randy directly or to me (619) [phone redacted]. He still has a long road ahead but he is Randy....he will prevail and make everyone laugh along the way.

With love and gratitude,
Tracy

On April 28th, Randy was in a horrible car accident while heading to lunch right around the corner from his office, where he ended up going down a 50 foot embankment. He sustained multiple injuries including a broken neck, back, ribs and leg. In addition, he blew out his right hip and has multiple facial lacerations. All 3 surgeries so far have included fusion of his spine with rods and pins, and also metal plates and pins in his right hip and left leg. To say he has a long road ahead is an understatement.

Due to the nature of his injuries, his rehab will take longer than normal. The orthopedic surgeon said he might not be able to walk for 3 months since both legs are compromised and he can't start rehab for some time. Because of this, he will be out of work for awhile and lose a significant amount of wages. We are collecting funds to also help him with the mountain of medical bills and possibly the need for home health. Due to the fact he lives with his mom, it will be imperative that he has the proper help when he gets back home.

The family is incredibly grateful for all of the love, support, prayers and offers to help. We will keep this page updated with his progress. Thank you all!
