Ray With Cancer

Ray is a 58 year old Teacher Aide who works at a High School in the Cap Program with kids with learning disabilities . Ray loves his job and looks forward everyday to get up and go to work. His journey started a few months ago. He was having problems swallowing and sleeping. It started to get worse, he wasn't able to eat or couldn't breathe when he laid down. He was always feeling Nauseous and weak. He finally went to Doctor Gordon who is an ENT doctor. The doctor made Ray take test after test. A PET/CT scan , a biopsy, bloodwork, heart test ,CT scan. The list goes on and on.

After the test results came back, Doctor Gordon explained to Ray that he must go see Doctor Salvatore Caruana who is an Otolaryngology doctor in NYC. That day, Doctor Caruana explained in detail that Ray had Stage 2 Throat Cancer and that he needed surgery asap. It was going toward his lymph nodes and if got there it might not be curable. Ray had to go for more test and surgery is scheduled for April 16th at Milstein Hospital CUMC. After surgery radiation treatment is necessary. He will have to learn how to swallow and speak again. He will be out of work for awhile and is devastated about it. He has a long journey ahead of him.

Cancer is something we have, not who we are. So to everyone who doesn't understand what we go through to defeat this disease that invades us, you need to understand how much courage it takes to go through this battle. When all is said and done, we will face this illness and by doing so we will find that this is how heros are made.
