My name is Ray Buckner and I live in Columbus, OH.
On May 18, 2020 I will be getting top surgery with Dr. Rachel Bluebond-Langner at NYU. My deepest hope is that this surgery can help me feel more at home in my body and can help my heart feel more at peace. I thank you so very much for any support you can offer in helping me pay for the fees associated with this surgery, including surgeon fees, anesthesiologist, hospital fees, and medication. As a graduate student my earnings are quite minimal, so any amount that you are able to offer to help me with these costs is profoundly appreciated.
I have the privilege of being a Masters student at Ohio State University. I study Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies. I care tremendously about suffering and oppression, which is why my research focuses on sexual violence in Buddhist communities. I also care deeply about embodiment--asking questions about what it means to live in a trans body, in a surviving body, in a body that has lived many lives of pain and beauty.
Outside of being a student I'm a writer. I write about being trans. I write poetry. But mostly I write personal essays about what it means to be a trans Buddhist--what it might look like to find refuge in a hurting body and world. Through my writing I try to connect with my pain, hoping so deeply it can help to alleviate that of others.
I do my best to live a kind and loving life. I try my best to make this world a better place. I try my very best to show up for those I love.
With this top surgery I'm trying to show up for myself. I'm trying to let myself live--to let myself have the right to thrive, or at least aspire toward thriving. This life has not been easy, but I know with this surgery, this life is looking up. I know there are beautiful days ahead.
