Homeless couple needs help
Donation protected
Hello and thank you for your donation consideration. My Aunt and Uncle became homeless at the beginning of December. I have been helping them out for several weeks trying to find them shelter. I have spent an insane number of hours on the phone trying to get more information on programs they may benefit from. We started at the Department of Public Social Services. I assisted them in applying for General Relief. For those that don't know, it is basically a loan against your future social security. When either one go to apply in 5 or so years whatever monies they use now will be taken from their first few payments from Social Security. It is not a handout. It's also not much. I think the maximum amount given per month is around $300-$400. When they applied both had to make doctors appointments to get a physician to say whether or not they were able to work. That is also a part of General Relief. If you are able, you must enroll in a program and show you are looking for work. There may even be a number of applications you must submit, I'm not 100%. General Relief will not be approved until this is completed. My Uncle happened to have an appointment that next day. When he was in the office they did an EKG and his doctor immediatly admitted him into the hospital. The next day he had an angiogram and three days after that (12/21) he had a triple bypass. Needless to say he is unable to work for some time. My Aunt is also disabled and unable to work. Permanent Disability can take months, sometimes years to get approved. We are in the process of helping her with that as well. When we applied for General Relief I was able to get them some motel vouchers which they have been using. The motels that participate in this program are not the greatest, at all. And the rooms they set aside for "voucher" users are a step
down from "paying" customers. This last one is about to expire at the end of this week. I was very hopeful when I found a church in a neighboring city that had 40 or so beds and they could stay for up to 60 days. This I thought, would help out a ton and give us 60 days to figure out a new plan. We went on New Years Eve to fill out the application and hopefully set up an interview. It's not an automatic acceptance, it's like a job interview. When we arrived we were devistated to find out they could not apply because they were not residents of the city. It was heartbreaking. Now what? Their motel vouchers are only good for one more week. My uncle is still recovering from his open heart surgery and they may have no where to go. Which is why I come to you. I am looking for your help to put them up in a motel for 30 days or so so we can head out to some shelters and speak with their in take case workers. This time of year is so busy that its almost pointless to call. We must head out. I have given all of the money I can give them, at this point. So have other family members. I need help to find them something more permanent. Some of these shelters have wait lists as well. Please consider helping me help them with a 30 day motel stay. I'm not looking to put them up in the Ritz, but somewhere close to the bus lines so they can continue to feel normal and maybe cook a meal. Thank you in advance for your consideration!
