Hey Everybody!
Sharea here. Listen, I know that you haven't heard from me in a long time. Chances are the latest thing you heard is that on May 23rd I'll be receiving my Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing & Publishing Arts from the University of Baltimore. A few of you may have heard I've been instructing at the University of Baltimore. You may have heard that I spent last summer in Ireland for a Writing Retreat*. Or, you may have heard that I've been feverishly working on my first book of poetry titled "dic tion ary.” Just a few more people than my momma have heard that my first play, "Black Maggies," will be read for the first time in the Emerging Voices Project**. Whatever you've heard, you know I'm taking every opportunity to immerse myself in writing.
In what has become second nature, I'm pursuing my passion to write and stretch my creative and personal bounds. I've been given the opportunity to spend three weeks in Cuba as an instructing writer. June 11-28, 2016, I'll be working as a part of the instruction team for the Cuban Writer's Exchange. Through this study abroad program with the University of Baltimore, students explore the Cuban-American exchange. As with my previous fellowship, I'll produce a creative work that captures my experience and allows me to relate it back to you. So in this episode of chasing my passion, I'm able to write and instruct in a country that has a rich culture and heritage in writing and diasporic studies!
It's no surprise that this opportunity would have a hefty price tag. As with Ireland, I have received a scholarship for a significant portion of the program's price. Unlike Ireland, this is the first year of the Cuban Writer's Exchange, so funding hasn't yet reached the capacity to cover the total amount per student. That being said, I'm saving and fundraising to cover the remaining portion. The amount I'm raising here goes toward knocking down the remaining cost of the program, and expenses while I'm in Cuba. With your donations and my continual savings, I'll not only have a valuable experience in Cuba, but I'll be able to facilitate the same for others. Most importantly, you'll be able to share my Cuban experience through weekly blogs and a cumulative creative work. I'm excited to share this part of my journey with you!
Finally, you have the opportunity to be tuned in and up to date with what I'm up to! You're directly contributing to the work of an artist pursuing her opportunities. When it comes to donations, no amount is too small. I want to thank you in advance for your support, encouragement, and donation.
