Natives in Hollywood, CA

Please help in the next phase of the “exiled ndnz” photo project.

- I was told as a child "choose wisely' because it will impact your decision in life. From those teachings, I do what I do in my creative outlet. I choose not to use commodification of stereotypical elements in my work, but to bring a realistic, humanstic idenitity of what is an Indian today. 

My second phase of my documenting Native Americans in Los Angeles, will capture young Native Americans living in Los Angeles pursuing a career in film/television as actors, dancers or filmmakers.  My project will document their paths as they pursue a day in the life in Hollywood. 

This photography/film project will document individuals (which I have 5 commitments thus far) who have left their tribal reservation to pursue a career in Hollywood.  They will be photographed and interviewed within their contemporary environment -- living in urban Los Angeles where they still continue to retain cultural connections yet have goals to work in Hollywood.

I would like people to critically analyze my work and reimagine what is an "indian" today, because "Visual Representation impacts viewers for generations to come... it can be powerful, and it also be be damaging -I'll take powerful any day for the future of our native identity..."

Funds will be use for lighting equipment (strobes lights), additional lens rental and, studio rental.  Furthermore, I will be hiring a video photographer, makeup artist and wardrobe/stylist.  Another expense is going to go towards printing expenses needed to complete this project. (I do have a tentative art studio that will exhibit the completed project in Spring 2016). Funding will also go towards craft services and rental room for setting up.

By your donation, you will help in the production to showcase a neorealist portrait of urban Indians from different nations continuing to keep tribal traditions alive while pursuing a career in Hollywood.

“Project “Legacy of Exiled NDNZ” was an idea that became a reality!  Over 5 years ago I had conjured up the idea to create a neo-realist photo/film project to pay tribute to the first generation of relocated “exiled” Indians coming to Los Angeles.  I had a vision, but this project has surpassed what I had thought!  I could have not done this without the amazing young adults who agreed to be part of this amazing project: Vivian, Spencer, Gladys, Kenny, Heather, Tony and Courtney!  I am forever grateful for their participation and commitment to the dream of this project coming to fruition.  Then having Duane, Timmy, Aaron and… John Trudell do the narration was a blessing.  I also want to thank Stephen Ziegler, Indian Alley, Union Station, Grand Central Market owners and to the many supporters from my GoFundMe – Crowd Funding to personal donations.
