What price can we put on Democracy?
We are raising funds to pay the attorney and the filing costs for a lawsuit to overturn the Reapportionment Commissions' unconstitutional maps. We have almost $20,000.00 from all of you dedicated Citizens. Let's make that final push to reach our goal.
UPDATES: 2/23 Our Petition was filed with the Hawai'i Supreme Court!
2/24 The Hawai'i Supreme Court Issued a Temporary Injunction until our Petition is resolved! They delayed the filing Period for Candidates for the upcoming election in anticipation that our suit might prevail. (Unanimous Vote of all Supreme Court Justices)

Please join us to protect Democracy in the islands. In order to have fair, effective, and equitable representation, we must overturn the House and Senate Districts map to bring them back into compliance with our Hawaii Constitution. The Reapportionment Commission drew maps without a real intention to listen to the people. They threw out common sense, making a gerrymandered mess of what could have been simple, cohesive, and traditional community maps. Instead, they clearly made an effort of political gamesmanship in map making rather than an honest, transparent, trustworthy, community and equity-based map that would reflect the diverse population we coexist with on this island in Paradise. All Hawaiian people know the legacy of thwarting the will and rights of our Native Hawaiian population and the sad and shameful history we inherit from the past. It is more than astonishing to find a current commission so intent on depriving our Kanaka Maoli of having a vote or an influence on our government. Instead of affirming Makapu'u Point as the natural geographic and cultural boundary between East Honolulu and Windward Oahu, this ill-intentioned commission drew a map from Waimanalo around the barren wastelands of Sandy Beach to include the multi-million dollar neighborhood of Portlock on the other side of the island. This is called Submergence. The power and money of the wealthy will by its very nature submerge the voices of others including people residing in Hawaiian Homestead lands.
If you believe in honor, if you believe in justice, if you believe in the freedom of all our people, stand with us to overturn this dishonorable and unconstitutional overreach by this Reapportionment Commission. With the ability to simply join two House districts to form each Senate district it would have been easy to follow the constitution and make ensure all Districts were aligned, but they didn't do that. Only due to abuse of their "Discretion", a lack of respect, and a lack of transparency of this Commission have we been brought to this place of righteous opposition. Fight with us to bring honor and democratic rule back to our islands. Donate today. We must raise enough to overturn this wrong.
All along the community brought forth maps with as little as 2% of population deviation that would have solved all these problems, yet the Commission would not even allow a side-by-side comparison of the maps. Never before have 11 neighborhood associations, balking at City/County control united in such opposition coming together to call out the unconstitutionality of this commission's decisions.
In the end, what will we have?
- Neighborhood associations realizing that they have been denigrated and ignored?
- Are people coming to know that we have an autocracy here in paradise rather than a democratic republic?
- Children growing up knowing their voices shall not matter?
- Uphold the Constitution of Hawaii
- Deny the abuse of Discretion
- Make Right this Wrong immediately.
- Support our People across the islands
- I am Robert E. Fox, the Secretary of the Reapportionment Justice Coalition. I live in the lovely Valley of Manoa on Oahu. We will be using the funds gathered to pay for our Attorney, Mateo Cabarello, who has submitted our case to the Hawaii Supreme Court. All funds from this Go Fund Me Account will be deposited in our non-profit account at First Hawaiian Bank of Waikaloa on the island of Hawaii. Kathleen Huckabay is our treasurer and she will be responsible to writing checks to pay for our filing, taxes and fees. All accounting will be detailed and accurate as Ms. Huckabay is a CPA.
