Send Rebecca on The 5 Gyres Expedition.
Greetings all of my ocean loving friends, family, and colleagues! I hope everyones summer is going beautifully so far. I am very exited for what is happening during mine and I have created this Go Fund Me campaign to make it all happen. Here it goes! Enjoy....
I have been invited to participate on a research expedition in the Indian Ocean in July of 2018 with the 5 Gyres Institute. Their mission is to empower action against the global health crisis of plastic pollution through science, education, and adventure. A small team will board their research vessel and spend three weeks at sea researching the problem of plastic pollution and ocean smog, returning home with educational solutions that I will implement directly into my 5th grade science curriculum. This expedition will further advance my focused field of expertise in teaching youth about the importance of sustainability, conservation, and environmental activism.
This will be the 18th 5 Gyres Expedition, and it will travel through Indonesia’s “Coral Triangle” from Bali to Komodo to sample micro-plastics and explore solutions to this horrible problem. I am honored to say that I have been selected to be the teacher representative on this research vessel!
Through their Asia Pacific Action Against Plastic Pollution program, 5 Gyres is collaborating with NGOs in Southeast Asia to highlight and scale zero-waste efforts in the region. Data collected on this Expedition will be incorporated into The 5 Gyres Institutes global dataset of micro-plastics, used in the update of 5 Gyres’ Global Estimate of Marine Plastic Pollution study.
This expedition and the resulting direct experience in the field will have a powerful and inspiring impact as it will deeply inform my teaching and classroom practices here in California. I have been a plastic free classroom for the past four years and look forward to discovering new knowledge and researching new ideas to effectively integrate into my incoming 5th grade classroom, beginning in the fall of 2018.
So you guys, In order to make this incredible and invaluable opportunity happen, I humbly ask for your donation of any size. It will be my deep honor to have you all, my friends, family, and community as my sponsors, and my promise to you is that I will represent ALL OF US on this amazing research expedition. Your donations will pay for the following:
1) My seat on the 18th annual 5 Gyres Research Expedition
2) Airfare
3) Travel expenses and equipment (Some front and backend accommodations, food, basic open water weather protection gear, research equipment)
With the release of this Go Fund ME campaign to the world, I send with it my deepest gratitude and a humble prayer that everyone will feel the drive and drive and intention behind it, that help of any size will be given in the spirit of true action against this very serious problem that is chocking our Earths Oceans.
Thank you all from the bottom of the sea, and look for updates soon. Lets do this!!!
