Medically Necessary Dental Surgery

Donation protected

The Story: As most of my friends know, I am a type 1 Diabetic. Recently I was hospitalized for extremely high blood sugars that were due to an infection in my teeth.  While at the hospital I was told that if I did not have dental surgery to get all of my teeth removed, I would die.  This has really opened my eyes to the challenge we have in the U.S. to connect our dental care to our health care. My dental problems are having a huge impact on my health and I feel that I am staring death in the face.

The Current Struggle: After leaving the hospital I went to the recommended dentist and was told that I have four infections going on in my mouth. The dentist urged me  to pull all teeth as soon as possible. Also he said I would need some bone surgery.  The dentist also recommended  immediate dentures to place in my mouth right after the sugery.  He stated that  it would work as a bandaid for swelling and prevent further infection with dry socket issues.  After seeing the dentist, I was taken into the finance room where I was given 2 options of dental treatments.   The basic plan was $6659 and the more expensive was $7,599. The price difference is about the dentures. I will need a new pair in the next 11 months as the immediates are very basic and after my mouth is healed they won't fit anymore.

I have made calls to over 23 dental groups: I have talked to many dentists in the area and because of my medical history and the condition of my teeth, this pricing is fairly accurrate anywhere I go in Spokane.  I do not qualify for State pay insurance and I do not have enough time to apply for and wait for a grant.    Unfortunately all the dentists I spoke with require payment upfront.  So until I have all money needed, they will not start the procedure.  I am very frustrated by this as I know it is a medical need, as well as a dental need. The dentists are very understanding, but they absolutely will not move without payment.  My doctor is extremely frustrated by this as am I.  I feel I have no choice but to start this Go Fund Me page.  I have made some bad choices in my past and my credit has been hit pretty hard.  I have applied for Care Credit and and a Lending Club. Both have denied me funds.  I can guarantee you that I have tried every avenue for dental help and reduced pricing.  I am in that crack of making enough to get by on, but not making enough to really live on.

I am very embarrased to have my mouth.  The rotten teeth are ugly and they stink.  I constantly taste the infection and it's gross. The infection feels like I have the constant flu.   I really need this surgery as soon as possible.  This is why I am reaching out to friends and family and maybe your friends of friends and family of family.  While I feel very humbled to do this, I know that God will provide for this need in whatever way He sees is best.  My goal when I am done with this whole process and healed enough to get back to school and life, will be to change the way that medical and dental are separated. Dental disease kills a lot of people, and for no reason except for the lack of money.  Please help me get a new smile, a new mouth and some hope for the future. Right now it seems pretty bleak.
