Rebecca's fight with Liver Cancer
Donation protected
C A N C E R..... it still hasn't hit home. I'm slowly accepting this diagnosis. It's hard to wrap my head around it since I don't "feel" sick. Liver Cancer is one of the "no symptom" cancers.
In July, I noticed a lump in my throat. Showed it to the Doctor. He was concerned because it wasn't my tonsil, so he ordered a neck CT. This didn't show enough, so he ordered a chest CT. I went on Thursday, July 21 for this test. Within hours, the doctor was calling me, telling me (as I stood shopping in Trader Joe's) that there were nodules in my lungs, and he was referring me to an oncologist.
On my way home, the oncologist's office called and scheduled me for the next morning. Long story short: I had a PET scan on Wednesday, July 27 and Liver biopsy on August 8. On August 10, My Doctor confirmed it was Liver Cancer and that it had spread to my lymph nodes and probably my lungs.
It is very slow growing, but it is stage 4 because it has spread to my lymph nodes and lungs. My doctor is stumped. I'm not a drinker, and we have no history of cancer in our family.
My first treatment came and went with no problem on Friday, Aug 19. I don't feel any different one way or the other. Immunotherapy is what they are giving me for the time being, and I will go every 3 weeks.
I have to endure a lung biopsy within the next 3 weeks and receive my port for easy access to my veins!
We have been overwhelmed with well wishes, thoughts and prayers. We thank you so much and ask for your continued support. Many want to do something to help out, hence this page! I have a new diet (doctor-approved) that requires frequent trips to the grocery store for fresh veggies and fruit- a lot of veggies and fruit! Almost no meat. Flooding my body with goodness in hopes that in combination with the treatments, I will be healed!
Joey has been amazing at helping with his Dad and my Mother. (we caregive for both of them) Spending so much time with us takes him away from his work, which directly impacts our finances. He's been to every doctor appointment with me and is an excellent supporter. I couldn't ask for better.
Oh, the lump in my throat was NORMAL! Apparently, it took me 54 years to find my normal gland, nothing to worry about! I believe that was the LORD GOD bringing my attention to all the rest of this! HE works in mysterious and wonderful ways!
UPDATE as of Monday, September 12, 2022: This past Thursday I had my port put in. No incidents... went smoothly. On Friday, Sept 9th, I had my second treatment and Joey had knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus. My treatment went great, no ill effects other than me being tired (which isn't new!). Joey's knee also seems to be healing nicely, but he had an adverse reaction to the anesthesia. Muscle spasms... not fun. Every day he feels a bit better. Physical therapy starts next week.
My lung biopsy is scheduled for September 22, Thursday. To say I'm not looking forward to it would be an understatement. Please pray for little to no pain!
