Hey, you all! My name is Carlee Permenter. I live in Carthage, Texas, and work for the Panola Watchman. My friend's name is Leighanna Shubert, and as I am sure many of you all know, in the Carthage/Gary community, her family got into a major car accident on HWY 59 early on the morning of December 8th, 2023.           Leighanna has been a good friend of mine for a while now. She is one of the MOST responsible teenagers I know. She works a full-time job, goes to school, and still comes home and takes care of business when needed. Her mother, Rebeka Shubert, was the driver in the accident and was admitted via helicopter to the hospital in Louisiana with a shattered pelvis, multiple broken ribs, a hole in her diaphragm from where her stomach came into her chest at impact, her spleen has been removed, numerous broken vertebrae, liver laceration, internal bleeding, bruised kidneys, and many many more traumatic injuries. She was on a ventilator for a week. It is being said that she may not be out of the hospital for 6-12 months including rehab. She was a nurse and loved her job and the people she worked with. Not everyone has the strength and willpower to work in that specialty. Rebeka is one of the strongest ladies I know. Her younger brother Bentley was in the backseat of the vehicle when the incident occurred; he suffered from internal bleeding and multiple fractures in his arm, wrist, collarbone, and jaw. He was life-flighted to a children's hospital in Houston. He is home now. The moral of my coming to you all and writing this out is that I want to request donations for the Shubert family. They have done so much for me, and this is well deserved. Leighanna and her grandmother have been driving to Louisiana every single morning, staying until 9 pm, and going back every single night since the morning of her mother's wreck. That is almost 1,000 miles, not even in 2 weeks. Leighanna has been missing classes to be with her mom and missing work; she is worried about her mom's medical bills and all the bills at Rebeka's house, knowing she might not be able to work again. I told her, "Tootie girl, why are you worrying about these bills right now?" She responded, "The bills do not stop just because it feels like life is. No matter what, they have to get paid." That broke my heart to hear. Please donate anything to help get the stress off of Leighanna and her grandmother's shoulders. Thank you so much. Anything you donated would be used towards medical expenses for both brother and mother, buying a wheelchair, building a ramp, buying a hospital bed for at home, shower chair, chair lift, utilities, travel expenses, groceries, and other necessities for daily living. I am trying to do everything I can for this family. Thank you all so much for your generosity.
