Rebekah's battle
Donation protected
My daughter, Rebekah is going through some pretty major health challenges. She has EDS, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. It causes stretchy ligaments, among other various issues with her health. Over spring break, she had a prolapsed uterus, which means her uterus fell down about 6 inches, and her cervix was actually sticking out of her body. She has had the uterine reattachment surgery, but only 2 weeks later, it has already failed. Another surgery is possible, but the doctor is unsure if it will have the same outcome and is extremely risky and painful. We are faced with the very real possibility that she will not be able to carry her own children safely, if at all. She has had to medically withdraw from ASU, get out of her lease on her house, and move back home. There is a clinic with a world-renowned doctor specializing in EDS, and we are so blessed that he is located in Phoenix. The only problem is that he does not take her insurance. We are reaching out to friends, family, and anyone else who is so inclined to help. To even be seen as a new patient is beyond our ability to pay, as it is $2000 for the initial 2 hour appointment. The mayo clinic is $5000 to be seen as a new patient, so we ruled that out as a possibility. Most doctors are refusing to even work with her, as this disorder is so rare, and she is so very young to be dealing with a prolapsed uterus. The EDS specialist will then require additional testing and/or treatment. We do not know the costs that will be incurred, but with both her parents working at the local High School (Dad is a teacher, and Mom is an attendance clerk), there are no extra funds to help her. The price of gas to get to Phoenix and back has also skyrotcketted since this began, as we live in Snowflake- 3 hrs away. She has not been able to work, and can barely walk without assistance. The only option she can afford right now is a hysterectomy, we are trying everything possible to avoid that at 18 years old. She, and we, have exhausted all other options for treatment. The cost to treat her will be far more than what we are asking at this time. This is a lifelong challenge, but hopefully, with the right specialist guiding her, she can have a chance at a normal life.
