Rebuild a sustainable ecosystem, damaged by a fire in 2024.

Birth, death, and change are inevitable. On April 14th, 2024 a wildfire started in our beautiful Spanish valley and raged for four days. With the fantastic help of family, friends, and strangers we were able to save most of our animals on the farm but had to move to temporary accommodation for six months as the land was so toxic. We are now back home and able to observe the lessons that nature is showing us. All of the Indigenous trees and plants have sprung back to life, and areas of our land have become abundant with new growth. It's all about what's underground, a geological survival hack for us to observe. The trees that have not survived are the non-Spanish pine trees, now, not just dead but the soil beneath them seems void of any life. We have permission to cut down 150 of these over four years. This feels more like civil engineering than DIY but it is also allowing us to work with the land in a creative and informed way. We plan to replace the dead pines with local trees, Oaks, Carobs, Olive, Almonds, and Pistachios. We have also set aside a research area to experiment with the use of medicinal trees and shrubs to create a water-retaining micro-climate, that could develop with the accelerating climate change that we seem to be experiencing. We are setting up our fundraiser to pay for the trees. With each donation, we are asking for a name. Each tree will have its own name and name plaque, a reminder of the relationship between the donor and the tree. The name can be a family name, an individual, or a pet. This is a creative project, thank you all for your help.
