Bushwick Food Cooperative Fire Recovery
Donation protected
Our beautiful Bushwick Food Cooperative was severely damaged by fire on July 3rd, 2019.
The BFC is a member-owned and run cooperative grocery store. Where anyone can shop! We work hard to bring locally grown, organic, ethical, healthy food to the Bushwick community while increasing awareness around affordability, environmentalism and the cooperative movement. We have been operating in Bushwick since 2009 and we are committed to participating in and supporting our neighborhood. Learn more about us here: https://www.bushwickfoodcoop.org/
Our store is entering its fifth month of closure following the fire this summer. Needless to say, this has been a challenging time for us all. Our Cooperative is not just a source of groceries and wonderful food, it’s a creator of jobs; and a gathering place for our close-knit community and Bushwick family. So far, we've received a heartwarming response and have raised a little over $20,000 from our many fundraising efforts!
However, while the BFC remains closed, we are paying for all of our expenses out-of-pocket. These expenses include staff wages, vendor payments, electricity to keep one of our refrigerators running, and network services such as our phone and database. This means that in addition to covering outstanding debts, the money we have raised is covering operational expenses as well as being put towards rebuilding. Our staff is a crucial part of our organization -- we cannot function solely on the efforts of our Owners.
We currently are not able to project a re-opening date but with the help of our members, friends, families, partners, neighbors and helpful, hopeful strangers we hope it will be very soon!
Thank you to everyone for your help and support!
