Help Rebuild Historic Fishing Stage
Donation protected
On May 30th, 2018 high winds blew down a historical fishing stage at Island Rooms in Petty Harbour! The stage was the first to be rebuilt by Cyril Whitten after the winter storm of 1966 that wiped out the stages and wharves of Petty Harbour and the Outer Battery of St. John's.

The stage was saved from destruction earlier this year by Fishing For Success - which is a nonprofit social enterprise dedicated to living, sharing, and celebrating the traditional fishing knowledge and culture of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. They offer free programming to urbanized and at risk youth, women and new immigrants. The stage was being used to store and protect handbuilt wooden dories, which are essential to the youth programming.
Fishing for Success was founded just a few short years ago when Kimberly Orren donated land in Petty Harbour, called Island Rooms, to be used for the project and Leo Hearn donated little yellow wooden boats called dories. Both Leo & Kimberly believe that young people need to connect to nature & the work of their ancestors in order to develop their sense of place & belonging. Fishing from a dory does just that!
Please help rebuild the heritage fishing stage that protected these little boats and provided indoor space for Summer programming!
And help ensure that future generations can enjoy the traditional architecture and fishing ways of Island Rooms by telling the story of Cyril Whitten.Check it out here: https://www.islandrooms.org/
