Rebuild Hope for David Cain and Shelton Ray

One of the lessons our dad has demonstrated repeatedly through life is: where there’s a will, there’s a way. He has always found a way to make things work, whether it was a car that needed repair, a fix for that pesky appliance, or a way to stretch the family dollar to make ends meet for all six of us. “Don’t go buy it if we can make it ourselves” was instilled to us as the Cain way. Dad is always the first to offer a hand for neighbors, family, friends and complete strangers. He has always been more comfortable in giving. Asking for help never even crosses his mind.

 

After surviving two extreme bouts with colon cancer over the past 20 years he is unfortunately now faced with a prostate cancer diagnosis and an unknown future. Given the road ahead, he and his loving partner and wife Shelton decided to take the trip of a lifetime to experience joy and peace before facing next steps.

 

They were 3 days into a vacation that they spent months saving up for when Hurricane Milton started to move in. Their home is far inland and having weathered hurricanes before, they weren’t overly concerned about the impacts of the storm. But we all watched the news closely as the hurricane made its way toward the coast and tornadoes started to pop up across Florida. Tragically, their home that they poured their personal labor, hearts and retirement into building over the last two years was destroyed by one of those tornadoes as it came ripping through their senior living community.

 

So, we are reaching out to our network of friends, family and businesses and asking for assistance for two people who would never ask for it themselves. This is our way of showing them that even though they are tough and resilient, we know that many hands will make light(er) work for the journey ahead.
