Rebuild John Joyce's Life After Eaton Fire

I am Susannah Mills, one of the many people helped over decades by John Joyce. He lived and worked in Altadena as a carpenter, art mentor and handyman and he lost everything in the Eaton fire. This new fundraiser is to help him with his ongoing needs as he tries to rebuild his life.

John Joyce changed my life and the lives of countless others. He was my neighbor, mentor and friend of 10 years who managed the property where I lived in Altadena. He was the person who kept our community as artists bonded, the person who fixed broken things who could always be counted on. A true helper- scholar of art and history and philosophy, with stories from San Fransisco and NYC back in the days when they were different and truly special cities. We all went to him for a book on color theory or Dadaism or poetry by Baudelaire.

He inspired us when we felt flat & made sure we had what we needed to make art. He taught me about oil painting and gave me supplies the first month I lived in Altadena. And the last day we lived there, a decade later, he held a hose up to save the properties from fire.

He is an incredible man and did everything he could for the community he fostered and loved but makes it clear, "I am not a hippie". He is deeper and more interesting, and his influence carried people into art practice and degrees at UCLA & Yale. He was a big part of raising us all up and it would mean the world to me to pay him back. He deserves it.
