Rebuild Midtown Eye Care
Donation protected
This fundraiser is raising money in an effort to re-open Midtown Eye Care after the protests and looting on May 28th-29th on Lake street in South Minneapolis. The business was looted and then later burned and has had extensive fire and water damage. The current space will not be suitable for reconstruction because of the fire damage and a new location must be found nearby. The business did have insurance, but it is only covering a fraction of the cost to rebuild. It is estimated that the total loss of materials and rebuilding costs will be over 150,000.00.
Midtown Eye Care was founded as a clinic to provide care and services to an underserved area by community members with respect and compassion. It was designed to meet the community where they are. It's location was chosen so that the disabled and those who rely on public transportation could have access. The staff was recruited from the surrounding community with a range of diverse backgrounds to bring a harmony and sense of familiarity to all that entered. One of the associated goals of the clinic was to promote and foster professionalism and career opportunities for the community.
Midtown Eye Care has strove to be a resource to the community and created a safe and positive place in an area that needs more of it. As an organization, they have developed employee skills and fostered the professional growth of many people within the past 7 years. This clinic was much more than a clinic and a place to get glasses, it was a place where patients felt comfortable and cared for.
We would like to re-open in South Minneapolis to continue our work serving patients in the community, but as stated the insurance compensation was a fraction of the damages. The funds will be used to rebuild the clinic in South Minneapolis and to replace examination equipment. We would be thankful for any assistance.
