Your Donation Can Make a Difference!
As you read this, Rio Grande do Sul, a Brazilian state, is facing the worst catastrophe in its history (it will be one of the biggest in Brazil's history).
Since April 28, heavy rains have flooded hundreds of cities, including many large ones. This has led to submerged houses and numerous material and human losses. The situation is devastating. It's been more than seven days of heavy torrential floods, and the situation has only deteriorated with every passing day.
Hundreds of thousands of people had to leave their homes behind, tens of thousands lost their homes and survive today thanks to emergency shelters, while hundreds are missing and/or not with us anymore. As of May 15, according to the state civil defense organism:
- Missing Persons: 108
- Confirmed Fatalities: 149
- Cities Affected: 449
- Sheltered population: 76,580
- Displaced population: 538,245
- Individuals Impacted: 2,131,968
These numbers, especially those of the injured, missing, and deceased, are unfortunately expected to increase significantly. It is likely that while you are reading this, people, animals & pets are still being rescued from house roofs and the top of trees.
In São Leopoldo, one of the main cities in the state, 180 thousand people, representing 75% of the city, had to leave their homes. The water covered their houses, and many lost everything they had. All of those people are in need right now. They need food, water, clothes, mattresses, cleaning products, medicines, pet food, and much more. Many families have been without water and electricity for more than 48 hours.
The situation is critical, and we need your help to rebuild the lives of the thousands of families without access to basic amenities.
Financial contributions are the most effective way to aid in relief efforts. Every single contribution, no matter how small, makes a significant difference. To give you an idea:

Our funds deployment strategy
50% of all donations in a week period will be directed to initiatives to be deployed in the immediate term, such as:
- Provision of urgent care for continued rescue & shelter to all those in need
- Acquisition and donation of mattresses, pillows, bed sheets, etc.
The other 50% will be destined for short-medium term initiatives, such as:
- Funding of local services, such as home building, repair and cleaning, machinery repair, provision of freight services etc
- Funding of essential goods to enable families to return to their houses (high-pressure water cleaners, basic furniture (dining room table and chairs, beds, gas ovens for cooking), building materials etc.
- Continued support to volunteers coming to help rebuild the affected areas

Regional scope and beneficiaries
Donations will be deployed in Porto Alegre’s metropolitan area in two heavily impacted cities: São Leopoldo and Novo Hamburgo (combined population of 500,000), where this fundraising team has a local presence and knowledge of trusted initiatives and entities.

We are deciding on the initial list of beneficiaries, which will be published here by this Saturday, May 11th.
