Rebuild Trenton Small Businesses
Donation protected
UPDATE as of June 6th, 2020
Use of donations: 100% of your donation will be prioritized go to small & minority owned businesses that were impacted. Funds will be donated to help businesses with the following but not limited to: physical repairs and inventory loss.
How: we are co-coordinating with local organizations to identify impacted businesses and assess needs. Considering we have reached our fundraising goals and the number of donations has slowed down. As of June 6th, we are setting up withdrawal request from GoFundMe so that we can prepare to disperse the funds.
Next steps:
1. Finalize the list of impacted businesses
2. Identify small & minority owned businesses out of 50+ businesses that were impacted
3. Gather contact info to reach out to business owners & assess needs
4. Coordinate with other local organizations to minimize overlapping efforts & fill in any gaps (i.e. if org A is only funding for physical damages, we could use our funds to cover inventory loss and other damages)
5. Disperse funds & provide proof via campaign updates, social media, and screenshots
About the organizers: Lisa Trinh & Daniella Virgen
While the GoFundMe is set up as a collective efforts of people in the local Trenton/ Mercer county area to help rebuild small businesses, we initiated the campaign late Sunday night, May 31st. My name is Lisa Trinh and I have been living in the Mercer county area for the past 14 years. My best friend, Daniella Virgen, is also a local resident and has been living in Trenton for many years. After hearing about what happened on Sunday evening, we became eager to do something positive and help the local businesses we frequent to recover. More info can be found below under Background.
Background:
This fund is being set up to help rebuild local, small, and minority-owned businesses in Trenton that were affected by looters tonight - Sunday, May 31st, 2020.
We should not risk our safety to stop looters and opportunists, but we can take action to support local businesses to get back of their feet and repair the damages. Love will always overshadow hate.
Hundreds of people participated in a peaceful protest in Trenton for the late George Floyd, who was killed by a police officer, Derek Chauvin. Among him was three other officers who did nothing to help as George was pleading for his life telling the officer "I can't breath"...
Unfortunately, the efforts to maintain a peaceful protest by the people in the city was damaged by destructive individuals that surfaced after the rally, many believed to be out-of-towners. They have looted stores and other local businesses. We will not let this dilute or desensitize the true issue at hand, and that is to fight for justice, equality, and racial disparity in this country.
