Rebuild village centre devastated by earthquake
Donation protected
Hi, I am an Australian volunteer supporting NGO's working with fishing communities along the Alas strait here in Indonesia. Many of the fishermen and their families here are faced with enormous changes brought about by large scale development, increasing population and diminishing resources. Some of the fishermen in the past and some ongoing are forced to work using dangerous fishing techniques, such as compression diving.
You may remember hearing of a major earthquake which struck NE Lombok in 2018. It was the largest and strongest earthquake to have hit Lombok in recorded history. 80% of structures in North Lombok were reported as damaged or destroyed and over 550 people died. Recovery is slow and the pains are still evident
JARI is a small NGO who works tirelessly, focussed on the Alas Straight which is the strip of water between Lombok and Sumbawa islands, working with the fishing villages to take care of their environment. JARI has a little plot of land in one of the villages, used to meet with locals when they would do their community engagement and accommodate visiting researchers, and provides a place to stay during consultations. This building and local hub was demolished due following the earthquake, as pictured. It remains as a rubble site.
I am hoping you can help us rebuild this village space by donating. In donating you will assist to create a space and a forum exploring new opportunities such as ecotourism, provide a space for ongoing research and education, rehabilittion planning for the improvement of ecosystems including mangroves and fisheries. Ultimately you will support these wonderful fishing villagers facing enormous change.
