A devastating Mediterranean storm named Daniel swept through eastern Libya over the weekend of September 9th, 2023, unleashing torrential rain and unprecedented flooding, equivalent to eight months of rainfall for the region. Tragically, the collapse of two crucial dams in Derna, which normally protect the area from flooding, has caused widespread destruction and raised the imminent threat of further inundation with additional rainfall.

The impact of this catastrophe is staggering and has disrupted communications, hindering rescue and relief efforts. There are reports of extensive damage to homes, roads, bridges, and hospitals, with access to affected areas severely limited due to road damage. The death toll has reached 11,300 people in Derna alone, with expectations of this figure rising, possibly to 20,000. Thousands are injured, and over 10,100 remain missing, many of whom are displaced and unable to contact their families. Displacement has reached alarming proportions, with approximately 43,000 individuals displaced in eastern Libya, including around 16,000 in Derna and surrounding areas alone. Just over 2,000 miles from the U.S. mainland, a catastrophic wildfire ravaged Maui on August 8th, 2023 resulting in over 100 lives lost and the destruction of the vibrant Lahaina, a vital economic hub. Unforeseen factors, including a severe drought and the influence of Hurricane Dora, created a perfect storm of conditions, driving the rapid spread of the wildfires. Governor Josh Green labeled this disaster as possibly the "largest natural disaster in Hawaii's state history," with over 2,200 buildings damaged in Lahaina alone.

The situation remains dire, with hundreds of lives lost, and more fatalities feared as search and rescue efforts continue amidst the ashes and rubble. The cost of rebuilding, estimated to be in the billions, signifies a long road to recovery for Maui, particularly for the Lahaina region. As of September 14th, 2023, the Morocco earthquake has left a devastating impact, with 2,946 lives lost and nearly 450,000 individuals affected. The earthquake led to significant internal displacements, especially in Marrakesh and Taroudant, leaving communities in need of support. In regions like Al Haouz, Taroudant, and Marrakech-Safi, many face the urgent challenge of accessing essentials like water, food, and shelter. The destruction of traditional mud houses has rendered numerous families homeless, particularly in mountainous areas.

The situation demands immediate attention in the form of rescue efforts, debris clearance, healthcare, sanitation, and mental health support. Women, children, unaccompanied minors, the elderly, and people with disabilities are among the most vulnerable groups affected. Our support is vital to provide these affected communities with the essentials they need, including tents, blankets, clean water, and hygiene kits, to ensure their survival and well-being in the wake of this disaster.
