Rebuilding Morales, Izabal, Guatemala
Donation protected
On the morning of November 5, 2020, Hurricane Eta reached land in Central America. The municipality of Morales, Izabal in Guatemala was one of many locations devastated by this hurricane.
Residents were awakened at 3 a.m. to rapidly rising water levels. In many areas, the waters had already reached inside people's homes before the evacuations began. The residents of Morales were forced to take whatever belongings they could carry and rush to safety.
What proceeded was a torrential downpour that swelled the neighboring rivers to unthinkable proportions. In the videos below we can see water levels reaching upwards of 10 feet above normal ground levels, completely engulfing some homes underwater. In certain areas, people spent multiple days waiting on the roofs of their homes before help arrived.
The help that arrived was often in the forms of fellow Morales residents. The residents of this town are resilient, caring, and neighborly people; even in the face of losing everything they owned, they turned to help their fellow man and woman. In the videos and photos posted below, we see many instances of citizens doing whatever they could to help each other while trying to stay optimistic.
Days have passed since that horrible morning and now people are returning to find their homes destroyed and all of their belongings covered in mud. In some instances, entire homes were swept away by the powerful currents.
I come to you now asking for donations to help these people get back on their feet. The residents of this town are very selfless, hard working, and compassionate people. Already recovering from the economic consequences of COVID-19, they need a helping hand to recover some semblance of a normal life.
Any money you contribute will go directly towards purchasing food, bedding, clothing, furniture, medical supplies, and many other life supporting necessities. Donating even $5 will help a family have a meal. I will be traveling to Morales, Izabal to personally deliver the money raised. We will work directly with community leaders to distribute this money in the most efficient way. I have been in constant contact with a local church pastor, school teacher, and my father who is already on site. I will post updates and be as transparent as possible about where this money is going. Our goal is to help those with the most need. I expect to be in Morales, Izabal within two weeks, contingent on the conditions of the roads. Thank you for taking the time to read this. I look forward to providing updates and show the resilience of the people of Morales, Izabal.
