Rebuilding Butterfly Sanctuary After Lahaina Fire

Hi, My name is Shaowei Liu, a children’s book author/illustrator.

I raise butterflies.

My home was completely burned down in the tragic Lahaina fire on Aug.8, 2023, together with my butterfly sanctuary that I started to build in 2019. Since 2020, I have raised close to 1000 Monarch butterflies, Gulf Fritillaries and Asian Swallowtails in the beautiful and peaceful corner tucked behind the historical Old Prison. （ https://www.instagram.com/lushgrassart/ ）

Among many unknowns of the ash-covered land, one thing I know I could do: rebuilding a small habitat to attract butterflies back to our neighborhood. In order to do so, tents or a shed need to be set up to provide a place for us to rest and store tools. The cost of a temporary shelter as well as basic living accessories could run from $2000-$20,000.

Any amount is appreciated and so are your kind words of support. In this unique event my fundraising purpose is beyond money, it is also for morale, courage and hope.

I will donate 1/3 of what I could collect to each of my neighbors: Pat & Hailey and Uncle Nelson’s family. For years their yards had been the extensions of my butterfly sanctuary and we collaborated in preserving the natural beauty and quaintness of Waianae Place. Hopefully we will continue to support one another throughout the recovering/rebuilding process and make Waianae exceptional again!
