Rebuilding our plant nursery after vandalism
Hello!
We are raising money to repair and rebuild Sunnyside's plant nursery and allotment site after the recent vandalism.
Why we need to raise money
On Monday evening we were devastated to discover that vandals had attacked our lovely garden. Our polytunnel greenhouse was slashed open in lots of places and many of the plants inside were destroyed.
The plant nursery is very important for our community garden. We use it to grow plants for the garden at Sunnyside, and we also grow a range of houseplants and flowers for our Sunnyside Social plant sale. The money we make at these sales all goes towards the garden and running our activities, so this income is important to us.
We run our Cook and Grow club in the plant nursery as well, using the fruit and vegetables to make delicious and healthy lunches for our volunteer gardeners. We also have micro-allotments that local people can use to grow their own food.
Sadly we can't do any of this at the moment. The broken polytunnel means we won't have a frost-free place to keep our plants safe over winter, and the destroyed plants represent the loss of vital income to keep our gardens up and running. The large holes in the polytunnel also mean that our volunteers won't have a dry and sheltered place to retreat to when it starts to rain.
How we're going to fix things
Since news of the damage spread, we've been so touched by the number of neighbours and volunteers offering to help clear things up. With the help of all you lovely people, we will be able to clean up the rubbish in no time. We do need a bit of support to fund the repairs though, as we don't currently have the money to do this ourselves.
We are raising funds to rebuild our plant nursery so we can bounce back bigger and better than before! Our target amount includes the cost of the polytunnel, labour to help install it (the current one is embedded in concrete that we will need to crack open), repair and replacement of damaged or stolen equipment, and a contribution towards the value of the plants that were destroyed.
We are so grateful for any amount you can spare, and everyone at Sunnyside would like to say a big thank you to our lovely volunteers and neighbours for keeping our spirits high at this sad time.
Thank you!
