Reclaiming Mobility: Bob's Rehab Fund

Dearest family and friends,

We are the Mooers’ - Bob, Chikako, Sarah, and Patrick.

While we wish we were writing about a happier topic, we’ve suddenly faced our family's most challenging setback. Bob, our most loved husband/father/friend, suffered a severe spinal cord injury after a motorcycle accident while trail riding on June 4th, 2023.

His Prognosis:

Bob was lucky to be quickly airlifted to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where he was stabilized and received top-tier care. We are grateful to report that his brain and cognition remain unscathed, but his cervical spine took the brunt of the damage. After a successful spinal fusion surgery, his neck has been stabilized to prevent further injury.

Unfortunately, his spinal cord injury cannot be undone, and his mobility is severely impaired; he has not regained his ability to walk (yet!) or have complete control over his arms and hands. His doctors are optimistic we will get him walking again.

This is the start of a long physical therapy journey to regaining mobility and rebuilding his strength and ability to walk and use his arms and hands again.

The hard work begins now.

Bob and the family have relocated to Atlanta for 30 days (+) to the acclaimed Shepherd Center. We hope that intense rehabilitation will help Bob regain his independence and mobility so that he can report back to work and continue to provide for his family again. However, progress will be very gradual.

While we hope that he may be able to live unassisted, we must prepare our home to be modified to meet the needs of his current disability status as we prepare for this new chapter of his life.

We’ve received overwhelming requests from friends and family on how they may help financially. While it's difficult for us to ask for help, we recognize there is no better time to practice accepting the unconditional support of those who love and care about Bob and his family.

We are overwhelmed and grateful for the love and support we’ve received in the past few weeks. Friends and family have traveled far and wide to see him in the hospital in Spartanburg and now in Atlanta, and we can’t express how much of a positive impact it has had on our morale during these uncertain times.

The kind words and prayers we received remind us that we are not alone in this journey.

We hope that in the near future, Bob will be walking up to each of you with a handshake and a warm embrace to thank you personally for contributing to his successful recovery. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
