Recovery and relocation for trans woman and kids
Donation protected
Hi, I'm Petra and I'm fundraising on behalf of a close friend who's in a really difficult situation and needs your help to recover and make a new, safer home for herself and her family in their home city. She's chosen to remain anonymous.
What's happened?
A recently left an abusive relationship with no exit plan, no savings, no support and nowhere to go, and is currently homeless and sofa surfing. Her two children are still living with her ex partner. The situation is enormously painful for all and needs resolving urgently before more harm is done. Not that this matters - everyone should be safe - but A is an incredible person who spends the bulk of her time supporting other trans people. She needs to feel that same solidarity now from you.
What does she need?
She needs financial support to fund a new, safe home in the private rented sector, 1.5-2 bed, with enough room for her and her 2 children. She cannot currently do this on her wage while she is still supporting her children and ex partner financially. Once these initial costs are covered, she will be able to support herself and her family if she can keep her job.
What will my donation pay for?
Your donation will pay for:
- a rent deposit - around £1000
- (at least) a month's rent in advance - around £1000 per month
- basic furniture: 3 beds and mattresses, bedding and towels, family sofa, dining table and chairs, 2x rugs and curtains, washing machine - around £2500 (trolley with these items in Argos comes to £2475)
- moving costs/initial bills - around £600 (anyvan.com quote for a van moving existing belongings out of storage is £340; 1 month council tax for a 2 bed flat at the average rate in the area she's looking in is £89; gas and electric for a 2 bed estimated at £160 per month)
- 12 weeks' low cost counselling for A and the 2 children to support their recovery
My friend is working full time but she is not in a position to pay these costs at the same time as supporting her children in their current home. She can save a small amount per month towards moving but the situation is deteriorating quickly and so is A's mental health. She needs your help to recover, keep her job and make a safe home.
As she's working, my friend intends to pay all donations forward within a 2 year period towards trans people in similar dangerous situations. She's happy to update this fundraiser over that period to show she is doing this. I've told her this is unnecessary - people give what they can, and needing help is not shameful - but this is something she really wants to do.
Please help my friend. All donations count and are appreciated more than you can possibly know. Please use your networks to share this as widely as possible and keep sharing - particularly on Fridays, paydays, and when we are nearing an internal target - £1k, £2k, £4k and £5k.
Thank you. In trust and solidarity, Petra
